NVTV 16: Quick Hits: Marry Me "Pilot", MLS, Selfie

October 15, 2014 Nick F

Company in town this week, so I'm doing some abbreviated reviews this week:

Manhattan Love Story remains a televised abortion, only less funny.

Selfie likewise spent the week treading water, as the character work remains mostly good and the jokes remain mostly not. The supporting cast is shaping up nicely, but the show simply needs to be funnier if it wants to hold anyone's attention.

Marry Me had a mostly strong pilot that echoes the Happy Endings pilot in almost every way; it involves marital catastrophe, lovable horrible people, Casey Wilson, and is likable much more because of its cast and potential than the episode itself. Between Marino, Wilson, Gemberling, Meadows, and the rest, Marry Me has the comic tools to survive a mediocre script, which is pretty much what it did with the pilot; the first big scene was excellent, and everything after was fine, but all of the above was carried ten times as much by the performances as by the writing. If, like it did on Happy Endings, the writing eventually catches up, this could be a very special show.
